The Los Angeles community of Westwood is well known for the location of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). UCLA is one of the largest public universities in the nation and one of the world's largest research-based university.
Arthuer Letts, founder of the Broadway and Bullocks Department Stores, owned about 3,300 acres of Wolfskill Ranch which formed the foothills of Sunset Blvd. His son-in-law, Harold Janss, owner of Janss Investment Company, began developing the area known today as Westwood. In 1925, Janss sold approximately 400 acres of this land to the City of Los Angeles. Some of the land donated to the State of California allowing them to build UCLA. As the university was being built, Janss carried out parallel development of nearby Westwood Village. Today, Westwood is a vibrant community of fine dining, shopping and a place to experience the arts.
